Color Matching Competition: AI Versus the Professional Botanical Artist

The Fascination with AI Continues

While watching and following along with a colored pencil botanical art project by Emma Tildesley on Patreon, I marveled at the wide selection of colored pencils she chose for the project. She has a video on how to choose colored pencils for a project where she matches the colors of a specimen with her colored pencil swatch cards. Her creation of the colored pencil swatch cards must have been an impressive project in itself; she made swatch cards by color and value on different substrates (white, grey, and drafting film).

Still a bit daunted by the color matching process, I wondered if I could get AI assistance in choosing a colored pencil palette for a project. Ten minutes later, I realized: Yes, I could. Given the cue to restrict itself to Faber-Castell Polychromos colored pencils, AI created a colored pencil palette based upon a photo of a specimen — an apple.

Curious as to how the AI color palette compared to that of a professional botanical artist with years of experience, I devised a comparison.

The Professional

Emma Tildesley, a botanical and nature artist from the UK, has a creator page on Patreon. She graduated with Distinction from the Society of Botanical Artists Diploma in 2022 and is now Co-President of the Society of Botanical Artists.

I chose Emma Tildesley as she represents the quintessential professional botanical artist, and she generously provides some free lessons on her Patreon Creator Page. (Some might be available through YouTube; others may require a free general Patreon login.)

The Project

The project is one I have done—the Fig in Colored Pencil. Emma uses only Faber-Castell Polychromos colored pencils. Emma provided a list of colored pencils (choices are shown in comparison below). However, did not demonstrate how she selected them for this project.

First Cue for the image

These images show where AI breaks down - where there is too much complex information to convert. In the first image, there are arrows on the fig but no corresponding colors. The descriptions are good with one glaring error of #170 May Green being used for speckles instead of #103 Cream. On the second image, there are some arrows with matching colors but there are also some numbers unrelated to colors. There is one glaring error of Dry Woody Stem Tip not pointing at the dry woody stem tip.

2. The Anser from AI: Request for Video

Conclusion

As a beginner at color matching, I was impressed by AI’s color-matching ability, enough so that I would be willing to try working with AI when I'm unsure where to start on a subject in colored pencil.

  • It selected more colors for me to consider, than I would have chosen.

  • It gave me choices for each area, so I could experiment on my own.

  • It chose five of the colors the professional artist chose for this image, and gave some acceptable/workable alternatives for substitutes.

  • It used the color language I should be considering in my own analysls: color, values, tone, and saturation.

  • It used the technical language I should be considering in my own analysls: indenting, blending, and glazing.

AI went beyond what it was asked to do for this project and I pushed it further.

  • It discussed “indenting / reserving light details” with “a sharp point” or “indent the paper slightly before laying down the darker pigments”

  • It discussed “light glazes” and “build depth by glazing.”

  • It discussed “deepening shadows with complementary darks” to “creates rich, low-chroma darks rather than flat, deadened tones.”

  • It considered combining colors for shadow depth: Combining Walnut Brown (#177) over Caput Mortuum Violet (#263) gives the same dark value as Dark Indigo while maintaining a warm botanical feel.

  • It gave me verbal and visual cues on where and how to apply the colors.

On the flip-side, perhaps we should have stopped after the color matching. I wonder how much of the additional instruction was merely parroting phrases about botanical techniques that it could not fully understand.

Ultimately, there are so many ways the professional botanical artist excels in color choice:

  • to work with the object and not just an image,

  • to see and creating a complex color palette by mixing colors,

  • to map out a drawing with an underpainting,

  • to use techniques that mimic textures.

  • to present in-depth illustrations and extensive video examples.

These skills ultimately creates far greater complexity and depth in the final piece and a much more experience instructor.
